Welcome to the Wheat Farm. I’m honestly not sure exactly how this idea started, but step after step we moved closer to having a working farm. Our family moved from the suburbs of Charlotte to the country in early 2022. We started growing things that year, but it was more of a large garden than anything else. We then got a crazy idea that we wanted to grow Christmas trees. The first 125 trees were planted in the fall of 2024. Last year we added another 300. Last fall we also added our first flowers, about 4000 Autumn Beauty Sunflowers.
Starting in early 2026 we decided that we’re going to expand the flowers, and start to move towards it being a real business. There has been a lot of learning this year, but we’ve grown snapdragons, stock, baby’s breath, zinnias, more sunflowers, cosmos, marigolds, celosias, periwinkle, impatiens, and several different herbs. We are growing some of these as cut flowers, some of these as potted flowers, and some of these as both types.
Our hope and plan is to continue learning through the fall. We’ve got a variety of fall flowers coming, as well as pumpkins, and we plan to have some Christmas greens and wreaths in November and early December. In 2027 we’re planning to have cut flowers for most of the year, potted flowers starting in April, and next Christmas season we’ll have a first handful of trees available for sale.
Longer term we want this to fully support our entire family. There is a mountain of hard work that needs to be done to get there, but we believe that it is possible. We’ve taken the approach that we need something to sell most months of the year. Christmas trees were our first “commercial” crop, but they only produce revenue for two months. All of the flowers give us a much longer growing season, and we’re working on other products so that we can generate revenue over 10 or more months each year.
We’re learning as we grow, not just how to grow all of these things, but also how to run a business. There are things we get wrong, but we want to share the good and bad with everyone here in this blog and also in our social channels. We’re going to bring everyone along for the adventure, and hope that you’ll be able to learn from us too.
